Crows do. Toddlers do. You do too. The brain flashes when it sees one, two, or three—no counting required. This built-in number sense, known as subitising, kicks in before logic, before language. It’s fast, instinctive, and universal. Some animals rely on it to forage or protect their young. AI tries to imitate it, stacking layers to detect quantities, but still fakes the feel.
