AI Needs Critical Thinkers
As AI reshapes classrooms, the essential skill is critical thinking. My boss, Walter Sterling, president of St. John’s College, argues in the Los Angeles Times that liberal education trains students to question, debate, and grapple with ideas rather than rely on AI shortcuts. Wrestling with Don Quixote cannot be outsourced; dialogue sharpens judgment. Meanwhile, San Jose State professor Morgan Sanchez warns in the San Francisco Chronicle that an “AI everywhere” agenda turns education into retrieval, not reasoning. As noted in my retention post, colleges must choose inquiry and judgment over shortcuts.
