When Records Aren't Purged
As an alumnus, I join others in serious concern about UC Berkeley’s disclosure of 160 names to federal investigators. The release has raised alarm on campus about a chilling effect on speech and academic freedom, leaving those named uncertain of the allegations and with no recourse. UC maintains detailed retention schedules that guide how long records should be kept and when exceptions apply. Even when cooperation with investigations is required, the moment underscores how vital careful, consistent application of these policies remains. Universities earn trust not only through compliance but by showing their community that data is handled with clarity and care.
