Madrid’s Museo del Prado is using AI to do what the human eye cannot—count the uncountable. In partnership with sherpa.ai, the museum trained a neural network to tally miniature figures across vast Renaissance works. In Ursula with the Eleven Thousand Virgins, the count isn’t in the thousands—but just 139. Another case challenged viewers to count how many figures are packed into a painting of the Colosseum. The project challenges subitising, our instinct to instantly perceive and quantify objects. Faced with magnitude, we tend to overlook and simplify, while AI delivers precision.
